Dr. Joel Robbins from Robbins Natural Health in Oklahoma has some things to say about our immunity and this time of year.  This is what he has to say:

Our immune system is a highly intelligent and efficient army that works around the clock attempting to keep the body free of infections and disease. Over the course of each day we are exposed to millions of bacteria, viruses, protozoa, parasites, mold and fungi which the immune system eradicates without our even knowing. At the same time, many abnormal cells are formed in the body every day, but the immune system quickly destroys them before they can multiply and produce a disease process. When foreign objects, such as toxins, splinters, air pollutants, etc. gain access to the body, the immune system plays a major role in keeping them from doing more harm than they otherwise would.

Infections tend to be more common this time of year, but it is not because germs are more prevalent than at other times of the year. It is because the body is faced with more stressors than the rest of the year, which reduces the energy and resources of the immune system. What are the stressors that most of America has in common? It all begins October 31st with increased intake of candy. Then as the days continue, there is the ever presence of holiday goodies at the office and holiday get togethers. During this season, the average person will consume less fresh and raw produce which are replaced with often heavy holiday meals and beverages. In addition, the weather turns cold which is an additional burden on the body. More time is spent indoor, therefore less sunshine, fresh air, and exercise. Add to all this the emotional stress of preparing for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

It is not that we “catch” flus and colds from one another, it that we are all exposed to the same energy/nutrition robbing stressors which weaken the immune system opening the door for increased illness.

NingXia Red Part 3

Today we will look at the next four ingredients in NingXia Red.  These are plum juice concentrate, cherry juice concentrate, aronia juice concentrate and pomegranate juice concentrate.

It is amazing what all is in the juice concentrates and how they help in our health.  I have not included everything about these juice concentrates.

Plum Juice Concentrate

The health benefits of plums include relief from indigestion, influenza infection and anxiety-related problems.  The antioxidant power of plums help in treating ailments such as osteoporosis, macular degeneration, cancer, diabetes and obesity.  It helps in maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol, cardiovascular health, cognitive health, immune system strength, cellular health, electrolyte balance, the nervous system and aids in skin care and blood clotting.

Cherry Juice Concentrate

Just like most berries, cherries are rich in anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is the phytochemical that gives such fruits their color. Research into its effect on human health has shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

Antioxidants are substances that can either capture free radicals and minimize their damage to cells or limit certain biochemical processes that produce free radicals. In one research involving patients undergoing dialysis, anthocyanin was observed to reduce the oxidative damage to DNA as well as inhibit the oxidation of fats.

As for this substance’s ability to reduce inflammation, it seems to be able to inhibit an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. This is actually the same activity that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs perform to be effective. Cherries can thus be a natural way to help lessen the aches and pains that come from strenuous physical exercise.

Aronia Juice Concentrate

Aronia berries have the highest concentration of antioxidants present in any fruit.  That is amazing.  These antioxidants protect the body’s cells from the damaging effects of oxidation.  Because Aronia is rich in antioxidants, it has a very high ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), almost 80 units, the highest among fruits.

Another great benefit is it keeps good urinary tract health.  Urinary tract infections (UTIs) happen to millions of people around the world.  Studies show that aronia berries are five to ten times more effective because of the higher dose of quinic acid in them, which is proven to prevent urinary infections.

There are so many other benefits with aronia berries, but let’s go on to our last juice concentrate.

Pomegranate Juice Concentrate

The health benefits of pomegranate juice make it simply one of the richest sources of antioxidant flavonoids—healing compounds in plants—that nature has to offer.  Research has confirmed that the particular flavonoids in pomegranates have the ability to slow the development of atherosclerotic disease in mice and humans to help prevent cholesterol oxidation in the blood.
