Our next oil is Lemon! And believe me when I say that the uses for lemon essential oil are endless! I don’t think I really have to describe to you what lemon essential oil smells like, but it is freshness in a bottle. To get 1 kilo of oil, Young Living cold presses 3,000 lemons from the rind!
This is the first essential oil I came in contact with. So yummy! I started putting it in my water each day and diffuse with it quite a bit.

Lemon essential oil (as well as the other citrus oils) contain high amounts of d-Limonene, which is anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and highly antiviral!
Here’s some great information for those science-minded folks! The reason that lemon essential oil is anti-cancer is because of the high levels of d-Limonene! D-Limonene is known to inhibit the small g-proteins known as Ras p21, which is a protein that is critical for oncogenesis (cancer cell formation). In order for oncogenesis to happen, the p21 ras protein must be transferred within the cell to the plasma membrane. Once the protein interacts with the plasma membrane of the cell, it causes abnormal cell growth and transformations. D-Limonene inhibits the transferral of p21ras within the cell, blocking its access to the plasma membrane!
Historically, lemon oil has been used to fight food poisoning, malaria, typhoid and scurvy! Others have used it to help lower blood pressure, relieve arthritis pain, and improve the appearance of varicose veins!
So How do you Use Lemon Essential Oil?
- Cleaning: Lemon essential oil is great for cleaning. Not only does it smell wonderfully fresh, it’s also incredibly antibacterial. Anywhere, that you would use an abrasive (so on bath tubs, sinks, etc.), just mix baking soda with enough water to make a paste and add in a few drops of lemon oil for a completely non-toxic surface scrub. You can add a few drops of lemon essential oil to a mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it to sanitize all of your surfaces. You can add it to the bottom of your trash to eliminate odors. You can add a few drops to some olive oil for a natural wood polisher. The possibilities are endless!
- Skin and Body Care: Put a drop or two to your GLASS of water in the morning for a gentle detox. You can place a drop on blemishes to help zap them! You can combine lemon essential oil with some coconut oil and apply it as a lotion to help reduce cellulite. Lemon oil is also great for heartburn. So you can dilute it in some coconut oil and massage clockwise over the abdomen. This will also help with constipation.
- Alertness/Concentration: Whether you diffuse it, inhale it directly from the bottle or dilute it in a carrier and apply it topically to the back of the neck or bottoms of the feet, lemon essential oil is wonderful for waking you up! Studies have shown that it increases concentration and mental alertness! One of my favorite things to do with lemon is to diffuse it along with some peppermint essential oil in the afternoon for a pick-me-up! In fact, on my ER order I purchased another diffuser to use at work. Can’t wait!
There is a CAUTION with lemon!
Lemon (along with all other citrus oils) are extremely photosensitive. This means that if you apply them topically and then go out in direct sunlight, you WILL get a nasty sunburn! So be careful!
